SHORTIES is a fast-growing, impact-driven platform championing the next wave of female and non-binary filmmakers. Through sold-out screenings, creative development labs, and a thriving nationwide community, we spotlight bold new voices and nurture the talent shaping the future of film.
What started as a small idea has become a movement, one built on connection, visibility, and fearless storytelling. With over 800+ active members, monthly events, and 100K+ social reach, SHORTIES is a trusted space where emerging creatives feel seen, supported, and celebrated.
Our alumni have gone on to earn BAFTA and BIFA nominations, and our partnerships with organisations like BFI Network, AllBright, Cariad Productions, Terror Arcade, The RSA and The Department Leeds continue to expand opportunities for the next generation of filmmakers.
SHORTIES is more than a platform - it’s a network, a pipeline, and a call to action: to fund, champion, and believe in stories that haven’t been told yet.
Welcome to the future of film. You’re right on time.
Despite progress, the creative industry remains deeply unequal. Only around 20% of top-grossing films are directed by women, and even fewer reach positions of real power within production, funding, and decision-making spaces. The barriers aren’t just structural - they’re psychological. Studies show women are far less likely to put themselves forward for opportunities unless they meet nearly all the listed criteria, while men will apply with just a fraction. This hesitation isn’t a lack of ambition - it’s a reflection of a system that has historically told women they don’t belong at the top. SHORTIES exists because this must change. We’re not waiting for the industry to open the door - we’re building new spaces where women and non-binary creatives are not only welcomed, but prioritised, supported, and celebrated from the start.
Beyond showcasing a diverse range of short films, SHORTIES is committed to delivering immersive, interactive, and career-shaping experiences for our community. Our screenings are more than just watch-and-go events — they’re curated, electric spaces that include live Q&As and industry panels, led by our founder Lois Tallulah, whose warm, razor-sharp moderation style brings out meaningful insight and bold conversation. These panels feature accomplished women from across the film world, opening up honest dialogue around navigating the industry, overcoming barriers, and carving your own path.
We also run genre-focused Writers Labs that take 8 selected participants through an intensive 6-week programme to develop a complete short film script. Our first lab focused on romantic comedy, featuring sessions with Gemma Burgess (Showrunner, My Lady Jane), a development producer from ELEVEN (Sex Education), and guest speakers including agents, commissioners, and funders. Our upcoming edition "Scream Queens", a Horror & Thriller Lab in partnership with Terror Arcade and Cariad Productions, launches at Encounters Festival this September, further deepening our impact in the development space. Each lab culminates in an in-person showcase, where selected scenes are brought to life by professional actors - a rare chance for writers to be seen, heard, and celebrated. One of our Rom-Com Lab winners even went on to have their script optioned by a production company. We don't just support emerging talent - we launch it!
